Igrejinha (Little Church) – Focus Trio and Friends

Igrejinha or “Little Church“ is possibly one of the most important jazz compositions of all time. Made famous by Miles Davis, it appeared on the 1971 Columbia album “Live-Evil”. Little Church was one of two compositions on the album that were written by Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pasqoal, who had been playing in the Miles band. The tracks were originally mis-credited to Miles, alongside “Not Even a Maybe” and “Selim”.

Marc met Hermeto for the first time in 1992 in Rome, when he was on tour with Roy Hargrove. They were staying in a hotel, not far from the Collosseum. Hermeto’s band was also staying in the same hotel as Marc, Roy and the band. Marc bumped into him in the lobby and was briefly introduced. A few hours later, Hermeto’s manager, who remembered Marc from the lobby, called Marc’s room to ask if Hermeto would be able to play on his keyboards. Being constantly in the zone, he needed the keyboards not for a gig, but so he could remain deep in his creative zone in the hotel. Marc was carrying around a battery powered Yamaha keyboard from hotel room to hotel room on the tour for the same reason. Hermeto came to Marc’s room and hung out for hours to play. During that time, Marc and Hermeto talked about his experience with Miles. Marc, who was obsessed with Little Church, and got a rare first hand opportunity to talk directly to Hermeto about the track. He ended up recording the song directly into Marc’s keyboard and Marc carried that keyboard around for the remainder of the tour, having to ensure the batteries didn’t die, so he didn’t lose what Hermeto had recorded that day.

The version on Cosmic Indigenous is a new celebration of Hermeto’s legacy.

Cary’s Club Free Track of the Month – Sound Portals

The third installment of the Cary’s Club Free track of the month is here,!

This month’s track is “Sound Portals”. Each one of the musicians on this track was handpicked because of mutual musical understanding. Everyone on this track is dedicated to the elevation of the groove. I played with Aurelian Budynek (guitar) in Cindy Blackman’s Another Lifetime band, and Arun Ramamurthy and Sameer Gupta in multiple groups. It also features long term collaborators Ron Sutton and Daniel Moreno and Igmar Thomas.

The song is based on a North India Raga, Puriya Dhanashri. My mission was to harmonize a normally unharmonized musical form in an attempt to participate in the North Indian classical tradition. In order to incorporate the Western keyboards, I used the synth as my vocal because of its ability to bend notes. Also, the root rhythm is based from the Go Go bounce beat from DC.

Many thanks to the blogs that have been supporting the Cary’s Club Free track of the month,The Art of Cool Project and NextBop, by posting to their blogs and spreading the word about the free download.
